How do you define sustainable?

Podcast Update

Our focus for 2017 for Sustainable: The Podcast is to release a new episode every Tuesday. We are also expanding our focus beyond Scotland into Europe.

Defining Sustainability

According to the Oxford Dictionary, Sustainability has two key definitions:

  1. To be able to be maintained at a certain level or rate and,
  2. The conventional meaning of sustainability which is conserving ecological balance by avoiding the depletion of natural resources.

Bringing these two together means that we as humans must maintain our level of growth, our level of development while still conserving the planet.

Sustainability is double-edged. We have to consider not just the environment but also the things humanity needs as well.

Sustainable Development Goals

On 25th September 2015, The United Nations created a set of seventeen goals to help transform our world. These goals have the aim of ending poverty, protecting the planet and ensuring prosperity for all – and needs everybody’s contribution.

The UN has named the following as the goals of sustainable development:

1. No poverty
2. Zero hunger
3. Good health and well-being
4. Quality education
5. Gender equality
6. Clean water and sanitation
7. Affordable and clean energy
