Shift Bristol: Mapped Organisation's Evolution & Developed Advisory Board

2022

Shift Bristol was undergoing a transfer of leadership due to ill health with one of its co-founders. Following a TreeMapping of the organisation’s potential, Shift Bristol was able to identify key avenues to develop the organisation and help realise and evolve its founding vision. It was also able to identify key organisational structures necessary for the organisation to grow and developed a seasonal advisory board.

Shift Bristol CIC is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company that provides affordable and accessible training to people wanting to create positive change in their lives, environment, communities and the planet.

It exists and thrives because it’s a growing network of dedicated tutors, practitioners, community projects/groups with over 300+ Shifty students from the last 12 years. This network allows Shift Bristol’s approach to teaching and design of course format to remain resilient and adaptable, alive and transitional.

As part of a change in leadership, Shift Bristol wanted to understand the potential resting within the organisation and transition into a more strategic approach in order to support the organisation’s evolution. They knew that this would help the organisation reach more people with its ground-breaking approach to creating positive change.

Most importantly, Shift Bristol wanted to ensure a collaborative approach to capturing its potential drawing on intelligence resting within its tutors and students. Using Earthself’s TreeMap, Shift Bristol, a small team explored the vision, potential within its ecosystem, key resource, necessary infrastructure as well as the strategy and tactics needed to help Shift Bristol realise it’s vision. The team also explored the impact that Shift Bristol could have through this.

Through this process, the team identified long held strategic objectives that were not fully realised along with key resource and infrastructure challenges that prevented the organisation from realising its vision.

Following this, Earthself continued to work with Shift Bristol to coach the organisation to overcome these challenges. It also supported the development of an Advisory Board through the creation of a seasonal cycle approach to receiving guidance and direction on how to continue to realise the organisation’s vision.

“In late 2022 Shift Bristol lost its Creative Director and Co-Founder to terminal illness. When I began working with Tabitha in the Spring I was daunted to be taking the business forward under new leadership, and my sense of direction and strategy felt like a fog.
Due to Tabitha's holistic approach, which balances the needs of people, business and Earth, I was able to navigate this vulnerable transition.
Earthself has enabled me to:
  • reflect creatively and replenish myself through connection with natural surroundings
  • clarify Shift Bristol's purpose and niche within its network and ecosystem
  • identify the roles and skills needed in order to effectively recruit people into the organisation, enabling it to thrive and grow in line with its aims
  • use Earthself's TreeMap to highlight and prioritise the strategic branches of the business. Rooted within accurate assessment of capacity, resources and impact of activities

I can't rate Earthself and Tabitha highly enough to anyone needing to ground their business and practice in a rhythm that is resilient and nourishing. I have never felt more capable of taking steps forward with confidence.”
